Sorry, you appear to have given at least one incorrect answer. WKH12 9.12.2 (page 9:13) says that if we are hailed on Ch16 then we should wait for FCG to respond. If there is no response heard from FCG after the second such hail then we are instructed to telephone FCG on the routine number. On no account should we answer on Ch16 without explicit permission from the Coastguard.

WKH12 para 7.23 (page 7:23) talks about positions on land and how best to report them. The OS map can be found quickly under the chart table and the satellite photos are hanging from the hook to the left of the chart table. Both of these are quick visual references. NCI encourages the use of what3words as a much more accurate locator. 

Although not referenced in WKH12, the main PC in the Lookout has an open tab called Grid Reference Finder; you could open this and ask the person to point to where her husband is on the aerial satellite image, right click for exact position references.

Although Langerstone Point is well known to us and to local people as a location, the Duty Officer in Falmouth is unlikely to know where this is or know or how to locate it quickly on their map. It is therefore best to give them an OS grid reference or a what3words location.

Revise WKH12 7.23 and 7.24 (page 7:23-24)

The question asks only about tidal drift so we can make the assumption that winds are light and do not need to be factored in. There are three equally valid methods for determining drift: using the Tidal Stream Guide, using the Rule of Thumb, and using the tidal arrow on the radar screen which is always updated to show the speed of the current.

The most common conversion for a cable length is that one cable equals 1/10th of a nautical mile. However the WKH12 gives us two other comparisons: converted to AWLB lengths and to ILB lengths. 1 cable shows as 10 AWLB lengths. Well done if you got this correct. See Table 3 on WKH12 page 3:19.

Sorry, that’s not correct. Before you move on try plotting this again to see if you can get the correct answer.

Looking at the Tidal Stream Guide (which you can view here) you can see that there is a NE current at 2.5kts (we know this because the boat is located off Start Point and the speed is marked specifically at 2.5kts at that position on the Guide).

In addition there is a southwesterly air flow at Force 5 @ 18kts. Using the Wind Drift Ready Reckoner (which can can view here) you can see that this will cause drift at 0.9kts.

A SE current and a SW airflow are essentially moving the boat in the same direction so the overall drift will be at 3.4kts.

In 30 minutes the vessel will have drifted 1.7nm in a NE direction.

Try the plot again and see if you get the correct answer before moving on.

As soon as you hear a MAYDAY you should assume an incident is underway. In these circumstances you should immediately begin making notes and silence the Lookout. Listening to the MSI broadcast is a much lower priority than responding to a MAYDAY or other distress signal. 

Even if it ultimately transpires that the MAYDAY is not in our area, determining this takes priority above all else.
