a) b) and c) are correct. A grid reference should only be given for something occurring on land; our postcode is never used because it refers to our postbox located at the Coastguard Cottages.

a), b) and e) are correct answers. Until last year an Incident meant the involvement of one of the emergency services; NCI has told that local harbourmasters are now count as an ‘emergency service’ in this type of event.

There are a number of ways to arrive at your answer.

You can if you wish use the formula in the WKH (7.22, page 7:23) to calculate time of arrival. However a faster way is to use the Ready Reckoner that you will find in the drawer under the chart table or hanging on the hook above the chart table. If you are not in the Lookout you can download the appropriate Ready Reckoner from the quiz website at https://pq-quizzes.uk/tools/.  Make sure you open a new window or tab to do this.

There is no need to incorporate tidal drift calculations since the tidal set and rate is the same for both vessels.  The wind will have negligible effect as it is described as light in the previous question.

The correct callsign for the portable radio is PQ1.

Revise WKH 9.15 (page 9:16) & Table 27 (page 9:5)

It can be so easy to forget these unless you grew up using the phonetic alphabet or used it in your professional life. You got one (or more) wrong.

Revise WKH 9.7 (page 9:8). The alphabet also appears on the console table with other reminders and also directly above the console near the ceiling.

We log the full weather when we come on watch based on a printout from the internet. We also log the full weather forecast when HMCG issues a new forecast which for our purposes is at 1310 and 1910 (summer months only). If there is a change when the forecast is given on Ch62 at other times then we note the change. (NOTE that there is an error in the WKH about the 1910 broadcast which is a new report and therefore should be entered in full.)

Revise Table 1 (page 2:9), Table 19 (page 8:4) and 8.4 (page 8:4)

b) and d) are the correct answers

a) is incorrect as the log is only used for defects that affect PQ’s DFS status.

c) is incorrect because if the issue has already been reported there is no need to send an additional Report.

e) and f) are incorrect as the telephone should only be used if the defect is of an urgent or serious nature eg something that may affect PQ’s ability to maintain watch or DFS status.
